Quima
The Quima (pronounced “kwee-mah”) are semi-intelligent beings that form a symbiotic relationship with individual Halfen and (rarely) with individuals from other races. Humans often call the symbiotes Fae because (when they are visible) they appear similar to mythological fairies. As with the Halfen, they are the source of most of the human mythological references to small fairy folk.
Description
The Quima are from the same planet as the Halfen, and they have journeyed with the Halfen as they expanded across the galaxy. Smaller and less clever than the Halfen, these beings are very useful when scouting new environments, particularly primitive and potentially hostile ones. They have micro-scaled wings, similar to a butterfly's (but with six sections instead of four) and have some ability to camouflage skin and wings to match their surroundings (like a chameleon). While less clever than the Halfen, the Quima have a wicked sense of humor which they often employ, to the dismay of the Halfen and any others on the receiving end of their jokes.
Reproduction
Quima reproduce by budding. Three months after a female is fertilized, between 5-8 buds form on her back. One month after the buds appear, they separate from the mother and become autonomous. The mother does not further raise them at that point. This is the most common time for them to bond with a Halfen.
