Jonas was born 20 January 2088 in Bezirk Lienz, Tyrol, Austria on Earth. He grew up working in a family restaurant in the village of St. Jakob in the Defereggental region of Bezirk Lienz. Because of the proximity to multiple countries, he learned to speak German, Italian, English, and Slovene fluently. He also speaks several other languages to a lesser degree.
He studied mechanical engineering (BSc) and materials science (MSc) at ETH Zürich. He is a Staff Sergeant (E4) in the International Space Exploration Force.
He is married to Joy, with whom he has two boys.
