The Lagrange Two International Space Observatory, or L2ISO, is a space observatory station in the Celestial Lance Universe. It is first mentioned in "Lagrange Contact". The station is located at Earth-Sun Lagrange Point Two, 1.5 million kilometers from Earth in the direction of the outer Sol system.

Description

The L2ISO is a classic ring station with a tall central section consisting of Primary and Secondary dual-story cylindrical modules containing crew quarters and amenities, offices, airlocks, and a variety of laboratories. The outer ring contains additional crew quarters as well as reception areas for conferences and visiting dignitaries. Four cylindrical spokes extend from the Primary center module to the outer ring. The outer ring consists of four torus segments, with the center of each segment connecting to one of the spokes.

Specifications

Primary and Secondary center modules, main level (each)
71.5m diameter
12m height
48,182 cubic meters total volume
Primary (upper level) and Secondary (lower level) center modules (each)
42m diameter
12m height
13,854 cubic meters total volume
Spokes (each)
5m diameter
72m length
1414 cubic meters total volume
Outer ring segments
1,119,621.5 cubic meters total volume (each of the four segments is about one quarter this volume)

Lucky Dragon

The Lucky Dragon was the temporary nickname given to the Primary center module for its journey from Perseid Station, where it was constructed, to Earth-Sun Lagrange Point Two. The center module had no defensive or offensive capabilities, and was damaged on 31 May 2116 by a terrorist attack (see History section, below).

History

The center module for the L2ISO was put into place on 1 May 2116. On that same day, humans made the first official contact with the Starkind, a race of space-faring dragons. Three weeks later, the Starkind officially introduced the crew to the Halfen, another of the older races in the galaxy.

The center module was damaged on 31 May that year when a terrorist shuttle launched by the Group 16 Consortium exploded near it, sending multiple shrapnel shards into it and killing Commander Leah Brackett.

First crew

The following were the initial crew from the center module, listed in order of command authority:

Construction missions

The following missions were to move the completed modules from Perseid Station to Earth-Sun Lagrange Point Two:

  • L2ISO-CM1 – April-May 2116, center module
  • L2ISO-CM2 – June 2116, spokes 1 and 2
  • L2ISO-CM3 – June 2116, spokes 3 and 4
  • L2ISO-CM4 – August 2116, secondary center module
  • L2ISO-CM5 – September 2116, equipment and supplies
  • L2ISO-CM6 – January 2117, outer ring segment 1
  • L2ISO-CM7 – January 2117, outer ring segment 2
  • L2ISO-CM8 – January 2117, outer ring segment 3
  • L2ISO-CM9 – January 2117, outer ring segment 4
  • L2ISO-CM10 – December 2118, center lower extension (to accommodate Halfen ships
  • L2ISO-CM11 – December 2119, equipment and supplies
